Best Route: From La Fortuna to Caño Negro (Approx. 2 – 2.5 hours)
The most efficient and comfortable way to reach Caño Negro from La Fortuna is via Route 35, not Route 142.
Recommended Route:
– Take Route 4 west from La Fortuna until you reach Route 35 (Interamericana Norte).
– Head north on Route 35.
– Just before reaching Los Chiles, take the marked turnoff to Caño Negro.
– Continue to the village and the wildlife refuge entrance.
Why this route?
– Better road conditions (mostly paved and well maintained)
– Faster travel time (approx. 1.5 hours with little traffic)
– More direct and less confusing than alternate routes

– Take Route 1 (Interamericana Norte) toward Cañas.
– Connect to Route 6 toward Upala.
– Follow signs to Caño Negro via Route 4 or Route 35 depending on traffic and conditions.
There are many options for arriving to Caño Negro, including:
